Production Research

Movie genres:

There are many types of movie genre available today. here is a list of the most common styles which we see:
- Action                                            - Mystery
- Adventure                                      - Paranormal
- Comedy                                         - Physiological
- Crime                                             - Romance
- Fantasy                                          - Science Fiction
- Horror                                            - Thriller

After looking into the many different types of movie genre available, I decided that I wanted to follow the typical conventions of a Horror movie. I will carry out some research into these conventions to make it clear which style I am following.

Horror Conventions:

Conventions are the particular practices associated with certain areas of media production and their genres, such as the cliffhanger in a soap opera or the desk in news broadcasts. Films also have conventions which help to identify the genre of movie. I have chosen to create a horror production so I have looked at the typical conventions associated with them.

Research into existing horror movies:

Having chosen my genre that I want to create, I have done some research into existing horror movies. I have created some evidence of existing horrors and also analysed some movie openings from the genre.

Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock was an English film director and producer. Often nicknamed "The Master of Suspense", he created many techniques in the suspense and physiological thriller genres. He started with a successful career in British Cinema in silent films and early talking movies, became known as England's best director and moved to Hollywood in 1939. Over a career that lasted more than half a century, Hitchcock established himself a distinct and recognizable directing style. He has been described as "the most influential filmmaker of all time", and is widely regarded as one of cinemas most significant artists.

He framed shots to maximize anxiety and fear. He created the use of a camera move which mimics a persons gaze. Also he was the first to use the dolly-zoom shot in the movie "Vertigo". This shot uses both the zoom and dolly shot at the same time, which gives the audience a false sense of surrounding. The shot is shown here at 0:33 and again at 0:47 This is from the original movie, Vertigo.

The shot has been used many times in many movies, such as this shot from Jaws.

We hope to incorporate this shot into our own production piece as it shows good camera work and a skillful shot, which if done correctly, produces a great false sense of surrounding. This would work well with our idea that we have, as it would emphasize the character as she sands there, giving the audience an extra sense of anxiety. Although this is a technique usually from thriller movies, we hope that it will be successful in our Horror piece.

Creating a dolly zoom:

In our production, we hope to incorporate the dolly zoom to add extra affect and skillful camera work. Due to the lack of a camera dolly or a camera slider, we will have to try and do this with the use of a handheld camera or with the tripod. The video below shows clearly how the dolly zoom is created although they use a slider, the other methods work the same way.

Props and Costume research:

Research into costumes and props for the production piece.

Costumes:

Below are some images of the kind of costumes that we would like to include in our production.

We wanted the outfit to reflect an older time period so we decided to chose an old nightgown to put the character in. we did this because often in these types of horror movies, you see an antagonist wearing this kind of outfit. This suggests that the character has been wearing the outfit for a long period of time, such as if they have awoken from the dead.
This is the nightgown which we have available to use for the piece.

Props:

In terms of props, we have decided that we need certain props that would convey the idea of it being a horror piece.
We have a few items that we need for our production.

For one of the shots, we are using an old wooden swing seat which sits next to a tree. The prop is already there so we will not need to prepare this, however we may need to adjust it slightly to make the shot look better or we may have to make the swing seat look more aged than it does. We hope to use the tree to our advantage as we think it could add more depth to the shot aswell as adding more of an authentic feel.

Also we are using an old bathtub which is outside. The tub has been there for a long time so it has moss and dirt and ivy on the side. We have decided that we will be leaving this to give it more of an aged look. This will make the bathtub seem more eerie so we have decided to keep this. The inside of the bathtub will need to be washed down if we are having the girl inside there. Although we may change this idea and not have the girl in the tub for health and safety reasons.

We also have a shot of a shed door with a broken lock. This means we will have to make the lock look broken or damaged in order to create the effect that we want. We might just have to adjust the lock to look broken so we do not damage it, or we will just leave it as it is.

We are using a fire pit which is in the garden and we are hoping to burn some old family photos in there for a few shots. We may have to burn plain paper so that we still have the effect but without ruining personal items. We can film burning paper so that you can not actually see what is on the paper so that we have the same effect.

Also we are hoping to get a shot or two of a ribbon blowing in the wind that is attached to a tree. This will give the idea that a child has something to do with the story line. Also we might have a shot of a teddy bear outside so this connotes the idea of children's personal items even more. This would add more context to our opening without revealing too much of our story.

We will be doing some shots which do not require any props, just things such as trees which we can find anywhere and will not need to prepare. The only thing we will need to prepare when we film shots such as these, will be the camera angles and making sure that the surroundings are suitable for the scene.

Character makeup:

The look that we want our character to have, is similar to the picture below from the Ring.

We want to have the girl wearing an old fashioned night gown which gives the impression that she has been wearing the clothes for a long period of time. This suggests that she has awoken from the dead or something along those lines, which is the look we want her to have. The girl will have long dark hair which will be over her face and messed up. This shows that she has been through some sort of struggle as she is in a bit of a mess with messy hair and messy clothing.

Also we will have the girl with dark makeup on her face. This is so that for one of the shots where you can see her face beneath her hair, it does not look clean and instead looks quite untidy along with her hair and clothes.
